Meet the Pack - TutorPUG

Meet the Pack

Our “pack” includes experienced tutors from diverse backgrounds who are equipped to assist in a wide variety of classes, from Accounting to Zoology (get it? A to Z?)…plus a few special furry friends!

While she has always incorporated some type of connection with teenagers and college students throughout her varied career(s), Katie Kimberling found a hidden love and natural talent for helping adolescents discover their inner potential more than twenty years ago. She has been coaching and tutoring as her full-time and only job ever since.

It was a long, hard road getting here. A native of Oklahoma City, Katie was a “Lifer” at Casady School where, in 10th grade, she was voted NOT as best smile or prettiest eyes (both titles for which she yearned) – but as “most likely to come back to Casady and teach.” However, after battling her natural gift for long enough, she gave in to the siren call of aiding adolescent angst, and has recently expanded TutorPUG into the “academic hang out center” she’s always dreamed of.

She is a proud, active member of Sooner Rotary, and a past graduate of both Leadership Oklahoma and Leadership Oklahoma City. Funnily enough, she was Class XXIII in both organizations.

Katie attended Bowdoin College in Brunswick, Maine, and holds a BS in Zoology (which her mother says qualifies her to clean up after elephants at the zoo), and an MPH in Biostatistics/Epidemiology from OU. She is a certified Academic Life Coach by the International Coaching Federation.

Katie lives in Norman with the wonder pugs, and when she’s not saving academic lives, she loves to dig holes in the golf course, paint whimsical pictures, write a secret blog, and catch up on true crime podcasts.

Alpha Dog’s right-paw

April is a current student at the University of Oklahoma double majoring in Nursing and Psychology. She is also involved in Greek life at OU, which means she spends quality time with her sisterhood watching the Batchelor (according to Katie). April is the Alpha Dog’s right-paw, her Girl Friday, and generally keeps both Katie and TutorPUG running on track and in the traces.

April is the self-appointed trick pony (or pug) in our zany little Dog House, and although not a tutor, she enjoys welcoming all of the students with a smile once they walk through the door.

Shelby is a recent first-generation graduate of Binghamton University in New York, where she earned two B.S. degrees in Chemistry and Biochemistry, with a minor in Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies. She graduated summa cum laude and with a range of accolades to her name, including the President’s Award (Spring 2018) and the Chancellor’s Award (Spring 2019), the highest honors in the State University of New York system for her academic achievement and extracurricular involvement.

She enjoyed spending time in her inorganic chemistry research lab, where she was a contributor to several published scientific papers, as well as volunteering as an EMT at a local ambulance agency, working as a mentor with low-income students, and fundraising for her sorority, Kappa Kappa Gamma. She has been tutoring both privately and for her academic institutions for the past 6 years, in subjects ranging from freshman writing to MCAT prep (she scored in the 98th percentile on her own MCAT!) to advanced molecular photochemistry.

Shelby can help with both general and organic chemistry, along with MCAT preparation.

Abbie is a current student at the University of Oklahoma, studying civil engineering with a minor in math. As a resident of South Dakota, she is able to attend OU because of her National Merit Scholarship, which has given her a unique understanding of – and appreciation for – the importance of standardized testing preparation for high school students.

She has been in the business of tutoring high school students since the age of 14 and has absolutely loved every second of it. She is involved with several organizations around campus and Norman, including Society of Women Engineers, Student Alumni Board, and Big Brothers Big Sisters. In her free time, she enjoys working out, playing volleyball, and watching brain-numbing reality TV.

Tommy has an extensive background in math and physics, and if that’s not enough for you, he recently elected to challenge himself by teaching himself the subtle nuances of business calculus, which he claims he’s been “enjoying.”

Tommy holds a degree in physics from OU, and rides his bike to work every day. He likes to spend some time each day practicing guitar, and also likes to go for runs, especially in spring. Tommy loves a good story (who doesn’t?) regardless of the medium –  movies, shows, books, or games – and clearly loves dogs as much as the rest of the TutorPUG pack!

Savannah is currently an upper-level Elementary Education major at OU. She is also a mentor with the Honors College Mentorship program, a member of the College of Education’s Kappa Delta Pi Honors Society, and the Vice President of OU’s Oklahoma Aspiring Educators Association chapter.

Savannah started tutoring at her community college’s Student Success Center and fell in love with the opportunity to work with students one-on-one and witness their growth. She thinks there’s no better feeling than strategizing with a student on how they can meet their goals, and then seeing them succeed and thrive. Relatedly, she nerds out (probably too much) about timely feedback, assessing learning progress, and data-driven, student-centered guidance.

Alix recently graduated from Oklahoma Baptist University with a degree in biology. She was involved in a variety of things at OBU, including Residental Life, Kappa Phi Beta Social Club, science club, glee club, and more.  Alix loved going to school and wasn’t ready to move on from the material or from hanging out with college-aged people, so TutorPUG is a perfect fit!

Alix on Alix: “I am passionate about science, society, and relationship building. I believe all those things go together so well! Originally, I am from Grove, OK but now I am located in Oklahoma City. I love the easy access to great coffee and the lovely walks you can take downtown. I am planning on going to graduate school to obtain a Ph.D. in Biology, Public Health or both. I would love to become a professor one day and to make a difference in a student’s life – like my professors made in mine. In my free time, I love to hike, longboard, and, of course, get together with my friends.

Quick facts about me: I am a vegetarian, I care deeply about sustainability, and getting coffee with people is my love language!”

Shea is currently pursuing a Master of Accountancy (with a minor in Finance) through the University of Oklahoma’s dual undergraduate/graduate program. Shea has been tutoring accounting subjects for several years and has really found a passion for it.

She is thankful for all of the teachers and mentors that she has had throughout her academic career and loves that she is now able to give back by helping others. Shea is involved in many different activities around campus including Women in Business, Beta Alpha Psi, and Price College Service Day. When she isn’t studying, Shea spends her time with her friends, watching OU football, reading, and watching cooking/baking shows (despite her being a horrible cook!).

Emily is a current student at the University of Oklahoma who will be graduating a semester early this December! Since her Freshman year she has been a member of the Honors College, the National Society of Collegiate Scholars, the OU Women’s Pre-Medical society, and also received an Academic Excellence scholarship, among other honors. Although she is majoring in Biology, her pre-health goals have led her to take courses ranging from General Chemistry all the way through Biochemistry, qualifying her to help with any chemistry-related needs you might have.

Outside of campus life, Emily also works as a Nurse Technician at Mercy hospital, caring for patients who cannot complete the basic activities of daily living anymore. Caring for people is her passion, and she strives to translate that level of care over into helping her fellow students succeed.

Stephanie is a Senior at OU majoring in Mechanical Engineering, with a minor in computer science and physics. She is graduating in the spring of 2021 and will be immediately returning to OU to earn her Masters degree. Stephanie chose OU because of the National Merit Scholarship and getting to watch a winning football team.

She enjoys anything that involves physics, math and computers! That’s why she has been involved in the Sooner Competitive Robotics teams for the past three years. She has also been a Dean’s Leadership Council mentor, where she mentored freshmen engineers and helped them adjust to college life and studying. Outside of school, Stephanie loves watching a good movie and cooking (most of the recipes come from Tik Tok).

Tom is a graduate of Bishop McGuinness Catholic Highschool in Oklahoma City, and a proud member of the Nu Omega chapter of Phi Gamma Delta at OU. Barring any major catastrophes or brain injuries, Tom is currently on track for both a Finance and an MIS degree.

He enjoys MIS. Frankly, he’s the only person we’ve met who admits that out loud – but he says it just makes “perfect sense” to him as he looks at us like we’re fools for believing otherwise. When he’s not doing whatever it is MIS majors do in class, he enjoys spending time with family and friends and – of course – attending OU football games.

Luna may not really be a PUG (certainly qualifies as an honorary one), but she is one of the sweetest girls you’ll meet. She is an energetic, playful, sweet, and silly golden retriever. Luna graduated from Obedience Training University in August 2020 with the attitude that “Cs get degrees.”

Her biggest interest is people- every time she meets a new person, she wiggles her whole body in total excitement (and is known to pick up shoes to bring to her favorite humans as a gift that says “I love you!”). She loves coming to work with her mom (Shelby), long walks, chew treats, and her best friends, Piper and Stevie. She says she would REALLY love to meet you, if you ever get the chance to swing by TutorPUG. Slobbery kisses are free!

Piper is a ten year old female fawn pug from Indiana. While she is a bit of a curmudgeon, Piper also considers herself the Honorary Mayor of Campus Corner. She has been known to jump onto a table during a tutoring session to “help out,” and has also spent entire tutoring sessions on a student’s lap because she felt that the student needed some extra love that day.

Likes: hanging out with Dad, peanut butter, mealtime, and long naps. Dislikes: pedicures, being woken up from naps, and her new little partner, Stevie. (Especially when Stevie gets too excited and bites her soft bits.)

Hi! I’m Stevie and I’m a puppy! I like to run for no reason, bark for no reason, and can fall asleep mid-stride! I’m always at TutorPUG when mom is coaching, so come see me before I outgrow my cuteness! Free pets and puppy kisses!
